On Tuesday Kate and Adam practiced the Chinese value of taking care of their elders and spent the day working at Grandma Nancy's house. I practiced wujiao, the common idea of taking a nap after lunch.
On Wednesday we made our way to Hogle Zoo's Asian Highlands. In the past we've been so busy looking at the animals we haven't stopped to look at the mock home filled with home goods and costumes. The kids loved it!
Adam used the Singing Bowl to scare away bad spirits.
Mason banged on the drum (with and without the chopsticks, much to my chagrine).

Colin couldn't get enough of the "sticks."
After checking out all the sleeping cats and the other Asian animals, we headed back to pack for our trip to Australia.

Thursday we went "Down Under" and learned about nocturnal animals like kiwis and bats. The kids put bands around their feet and legs and hopped like kangaroos then we listened to the Magic Tree House Book Dingos at Dinnertime.
Later that afternoon we packed up the car and headed out for a weekend of camping in the outback. We had a wonderful time on our annual campout with some of Shem's brothers (and families) at The Spruces campground. A moose nearly wandered into our camp and at night we heard howling coyotes (or maybe dingos?). We cooked delicious food in the dutch oven (chicken enchiladas and pineapple cake), played in the stream, explored the woods, and talked around the campfire.
When we got home on Saturday the kids were so caked in dirt they could have easily been mistaken for aborigines.
Now they are scrubbed and clean and ready for the adventures and refinement of Europe next week. See you in Switzerland!
