Yesterday we journeyed to the Arctic circle to check out some of the cold weather animals that live there. We read about polar bears and how they have blubber to keep them warm.
We did an experiment to see how blubber keeps the bears warm. I filled the space between two plastic bags with Crisco. The kids wore the bags like a glove and tried putting their hands into the icy water. They compared the temperature of their bare hands versus the hands with the "blubber" glove.
Next we read about seals and the kids put socks on their hands and tried painting with their "flippers."
