The Kitchen
We started by tearing out the old linoleum and replacing the sub floor. All that destruction was incredibly therapeutic. Here is a few days into the project.
We started by tearing out the old linoleum and replacing the sub floor. All that destruction was incredibly therapeutic. Here is a few days into the project.
The original plans included a top to bottom makeover, but we decided to go top to bottom and sort-of skip the middle. The counter tops and appliances are going to have to wait, but the overall change has been wonderful!
The cabinet refinishing went a long way to repair the damage from years of sticky fingers and worn away finish. We also picked out new cabinet pulls. (That is a whole other story which includes a local liberal female shop owner chewing me out for wanting to buy them online - "a faceless purchase" she said - when they were significantly cheaper. I was just trying to give her a chance to match the price and get the sale. I promptly hung up the phone after declaring my support for capitalism and a sincere commitment never to shop at her store again.)

Next we laid the new vinyl tile floor and replaced the florescent lighting with can lights in the kitchen, the landing, and stairwell. I got another kitchen light switch on the west wall.Add in Shem's amazing wood working handiness and we have a gorgeous step, coat hooks on the wall, and casing and base that look amazing.

I was awfully proud of my vinyl tile laying skills (Shem got everything lined up in the center of the room and I went to town from there) and love, love, love the new floor! Everyone thinks it looks like real tile and I love that I can't tell (at all!) when it is dirty. (Thanks Audrey for the suggestion!!!) I also need to brag up my new $8 pantry table from DI and the dry erase board that has been a fabulous addition, especially for keeping track of summer fun and chores.
The only remaining project is refinishing the kitchen table and chairs. Here is the table (through the kitchen window). It is has been propped up on the porch all week just waiting for me to apply a coat of black paint on top of the gray primer.
I decided that would just have to wait another day, because you all deserved to see my kitchen! Thanks for your continued interest. Hope you liked it!

It looks fantastic! I love the pulls you chose, and yay for finding them cheaper:) Here, here, for capitalism!!!
So pretty Tob! I love the stairs.. TO DIE FOR! The finish looks so nice and it really does look like real tile! Good work!
WOW It is gorgeous! I love it!
Looks amazing! I LOVE the steps and the new finish on the cabinets.
That is a ton of work and a great improvement! I NEED a new countertop in the worst way (cracked tile), but it keeps getting put on the back burner. :) I can't wait to see what you choose. Most people choose granite nowadays and I could see you putting in black. Personally I love Corian white. I love how soft and lovely it feels.
