Fly Away

Last week we took to the skies. We started by feeding the birds at Sugarhouse Park, which consequently were not hungry by 4 in the afternoon. We couldn't tempt any to take a nibble at our bread. Mason, however, enjoyed chasing the ducks and seagulls that ventured onto shore.

That night I fed worms to my chicks, true bird style. While I didn't actually carry the (gummy) worms in my mouth, the kids thought it was hilarious when I held them in my lips and dropped them into their chirping beaks. Later we enjoyed some peanut butter bird nests with jelly bean eggs.

On Tuesday at playgroup we did a live reenactment of A Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle. Each child got a few bites of apples, pears, plums, strawberries, oranges, chocolate cake, ice cream, pickles, swiss cheese, salami, lollipop, cherry pie, sausage, cupcake, watermelon, and leaves (spinach, that is). While there were a few neglected plates (my homemade pickles were looking a little limp and slimy), almost everything was consumed in true "Hungry Caterpillar" fashion. Afterward the kids all fluttered away like butterflies back to the playground (okay, not really).

Later that afternoon my children were sneaking through the house like little scavenger birds collecting all the blankets and pillows they could find to build a fort. They slept in their little nest for two nights, but had to take it down when Mason kept waking up at the crack of dawn like a rooster.

Later in the week we went to "Zoo Mania" at the library and checked out all their cool animals including a macaw, an Australian Sugar glider, a Peking duck, snakes, and many more. The next day we made some paper airplanes and sent them flying at the park.

By Friday night I was ready to get cozy in my own nest and sleep for a very long time.

You are so great to do this again with your kids. It takes planning and I'm sure there is plenty of craziness to go with all the fun. I was impressed last year and more than impressed that you keep it up! Way to go! I'm sure you'll kids (and you) will cherish the memories for years to come!
