Summer (Anti) Fun 2013

I started meeting with my friends Val, Ann, and Maria in the Spring to plan Summer Fun for 2013. We decided to follow the library summer reading theme and go with "Dig Into Fun."

My six weeks of summer (Thank you year round school!) were going to look like this:

Week 1: Digging Into the Earth
   - Kick-off Party at my house with Edible Earth Layer treats, lesson on types of rocks, a wheat sensory box for digging, and chocolate rock candy


Week 2: Mighty Digging Machines
   - Construction truck crafts, a field trip to the landfill, and mining games and activities

Week 3: The Diggers Down Under - Animals, Snakes, and Bugs, Oh My!
   - Worms, snakes, badgers, hedgehogs - crafts and activities about animals that live underground, including a field trip to the zoo.

Week 4:  Digging for Dinosaurs
   - Dinosaur books, dinosaur crafts, dinosaur songs, dinosaur movies, fossils, and bones

Week 5: Earth's Powerful Digging Forces
   - Crafts and science experiments about volcanoes, earthquakes, and erosion

Week 6: Digging for Treasure
   - A study of gems and stones, pirate fun, and a treasure hunt on our annual camping trip

This is what our Summer Fun actually looked like:

   - Kick-off Party at my house. Lots of fun and learning. The end.

We didn't do a single other Summer Fun activity for the whole summer. Instead I spent the summer working my tail off to prepare for a vendor booth at the Mormon Miracle Pageant in Manti, an olympic-distance triathlon in Green River, and a pretty amazing (if I do say so myself) Amazing Race for our ward Youth Conference.

The personal guilt of a failed Summer Fun plan was nicely overshadowed by warm days at the water park, hours of fun with cousins in the backyard, and a season of great personal accomplishment.
